Bottom line, some projects are best left to the professionals. For me, the most humbling experiences are associated with do-it-yourself home projects. My family will tell you that my estimation of my skills exceeds my abilities at times. I learned from experience and painfully trying moments.
One of my strengths from the CliftonStrengths assessment is being a learner. I love to learn something new. Technology feeds this desire to learn. Just Google a subject and you are faced with choices beyond the imagination. With everything you could ever imagine on YouTube, even the most unskilled can be presented with an opportunity to do something they once considered impossible.
There should be a disclaimer on every “how to” video that warns the viewer not to attempt the following unless they are trained and have the right tools. Even then, those like myself will boldly proclaim, “I can do that”. This holds true for me in the area of car and home repair. You don’t want to find out in the middle of a crucial project that you are not prepared to finish.
The most important thing I learned in this process is that it is okay to say I cannot do it or I need help. I can confidently say some projects are beyond my current abilities and for the projects outside of my comfort or skill level, I need to plan to have the work done by someone that specializes in the area of need.
In real estate, a professional is trained to plan and navigate the many actions needed to sell or purchase a home. A well developed and executed plan is crucial to success. You can buy or sell a home on your own. I have successfully done so multiple times. Each time required significant planning and work on my part to get to the finish line. I translated that experience into a career in real estate. I converted my on the job training to the classroom and continuing education (remember my learner strength) to become licensed.
